Sounds Like: Bongzilla, Church of Misery, Deadbird
There is a vast amount of underrated sludge bands hanging around that whole deserve your attention. TarLung from Vienna definitely fall in this category of sludge bands flying under the radar. Within the past three years, these guys have been very busy, releasing two albums and one EP, Self Titled (2014), Void (2016) and now Beyond the Black Pyramid (2017). If you have the ear for some trippy and sludgy rock that will drag you through the mud than give these guys a spin.
What makes Tarlung stand out in the world of sludge rock?
It’s all about the rhythm with these guys. As you will hear, they have a stoner blues undercurrent that becomes the foundation for the music. For this style of rock, they really have some infectious hooks.
What are the highlights of the album?
The last song “Karma” just grabs a hold of us. The track contains some very impressive guitar work and the rhythm is second to none making this one sludge song of the year.
How is the vocal performance?
The vocals of Phillipp "Five“ Seiler have this toned-down death metal aura that never waivers.
How is the production value?
Dark and filthy with a massive bottom end sound. Crank it up and let the room be filled with some dark and heavy sludge.
What adult beverage to enjoy while listening to this album?
If you can get your hands on some Allagash Odysessy, go for it. Brewed in Maine, US by Allagash Brewing Co., this 10.4% (ABV) dark wheat beer is aged for ten months, a portion in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless tanks. The deep brown color has an aroma of black treacle and raisin. The flavor hints at dates and a mild roast finish brought on by the ageing process. The finish is dry and punctuated by vanilla.
