High Spirits (Hard to Stop)

Crank this to 9.3 of 11 - Editors' Pick

Released: 2020

Genre: Progressive Metal, Hard rock

Sounds Like: Volbeat, Chrome Division, Aktor

The world of heavy needs more warm and rich melody driven projects like High Spirits. Where the backbone of sound is fortified via well thought out anthemic vocals and dueling guitars. Doing absolute justice to their name, High Spirits exude bright energy and forward movement all throughout their library. Creator, Chris Black, has an infectious swagger and vision that warms the heart. The ever active lead singer (Dawnbringer, Pharaoh, Superchrist, and Aktor) certainly has a penchant for staying busy. The “side project” has been putting out content since 2009 and Hard to Stop may very well be the best of the lot. The clarity and steadiness that this album brings will make it a mainstay in your heavy rotation. Lofty and calming hard rock energy, nothing to draining, just great production and gallop throughout.

Standout Track :

"Hearts Will Burn" has one of the best breakdowns we have heard in a long time at the 3:00 mark. Tremendous simple soft vocal distortion. The track features unparalleled build-up and a melody that will is difficult to shake... ”fly like an eagle, ride like the wind.” Simplistic brilliance is what we say. Hang on for the ride.

Adult Beverage Pairing:

Goose Island’s ‘Illinois Imperial IPA’ is such a perfect uplifting match for Hard to Stop. Indeed, you can get through a six pack easy in 3 rotations of this album. The Illinois, a 8.4% ABV 80 IBU Imperial IPA that pushes the limits of hop flavor and aroma. Deep gold, complex citrus aroma, balanced clean bitterness, medium to full body.
