Code Lisa (White Whales)

Crank this to 7.9 of 11

Released: 2019

Genre: Hardcore, Metal, Progressive

Sounds Like: Every Time I Die, Converge

Looking for a punchy in your face hardcore EP at a ‘name your price’ on BandCamp? Take a gander at the debut entitled White Whales from the Montreal Canadian crew, Code:Lisa. The EP features some interesting contrast along with laser quick fretwork. The 15 minute diddy of an EP actually provides the listener with quite a taste of what Code:Lisa has in store for the future. We were impressed by the diverse vocal styles and ability to hit melodies at a variety of levels. Both founding members linked up in Montreal to join forces. French expatriate Fabien Baudouin (Guitar) had met the American raised Zackari Bourgeois (Vocals) in the fall of 2016 to blend their fervor for everything hardcore.

Track Listing:

1. Etherized (2:44)

2. Weep In Hell (4:43)

3. Drowned Out (3:07)

4. A Gentle Thing 2:56)

Standout Track:

Love the driving rhythms in "A Gentle Thing". Quite the antithesis of the title is "A Gentle Thing". The track scores big sonically with three minutes of trotting punk-infused hardcore bliss. We hear some Offspring influence in the chorus that is pummeled by perhaps a indirect homage to Jordan Buckley from Every Time I Die fame.

Adult Beverage Pairing:

Let’s pull in a local favorite recipe that will blend nicely with the vigor of White Whales and engage in the ‘Montreal Cocktail’ :

1 part Bombay Sapphire

1 Part CC Rye

1 Part Suze

1 Part Meletti Bitter Apertivo

zest of Grapefruit

Directions: Stir all ingredients with ice. Strain into chilled coupe glass. Garnish with grapefruit zest twist.

Final Thoughts:

We have found limited quality hardcore releases over the last 12 months. Code:Lisa, however, shows some fucking promise. The debut albeit quite short will wet your appetite for a burst of sonic frenzy. White Whales is quite entertaining and perhaps would resonate further with another quick EP follow from the Montreal crew. We are standing by, but in the meantime throw a few buck their way and grab this solid EP.
