Circus Trees (Delusions)

Crank this to 8.8 of 11

Released: 2020

Genre: Slowcore, Shoegaze

Sounds Like: Devics, Cigarettes After Sex, Slowdive

Circus Trees hit some very dark realms on their first full-length album entitled Delusions. The band consists of three very talented sisters ages 18, 16, and 14 hailing from Marlborough Massachusetts. The follow-up to their less pensive EP ‘Sakura’, pulls the listener into 37 minutes of emotionally traumatic fog. Fog that hits some very dark and gut-wrenching topics such as depression, solitude, and suicide. The haze is consistent throughout the album as Finola’s infectious melodic tone does not waiver taking us through what feels like a classic concept album that revolves around isolation twisting through some very dark pathways. We appreciate the band’s stedfast ways in keeping with the slowcore fuzz making for some very dramatic contrast between their highs and lows throughout. The trio’s patience and vision make for some very impressive sad melodies that will stick with you throughout the day. We equate Delusions to watching that very dark and disturbing movie that you just cannot shake from your mind (e.g. SlingBlade, Boys Don’t Cry, etc.).

Track Listing:

1. Wasted Air (6:17)

2. Wicked (5:46)

3. Breath (7:37)

4. Confronting Time (4:18)

5. Memories (6:27)

6. Till We’re Dead (8:14)

Standout Track:

Interestingly enough, we have to give the prize to ‘Confronting Time’, the shortest track of the lot. This track contains the saddest melodic hook that will almost trigger that involuntary hard swallow. Great contrast on this track as it hits some very high range shoe gaze amongst the plodding dirge-like rhythms.

Adult Beverage Pairing:

Lets go the under age 21 mocktail route with this one. ‘Delusions’ goes well with this gloomy liquid.

Dark & Stormy Mocktail-In the non-alcoholic version substitute 1/2 teaspoon of blackstrap molasses for the dark rum. Stir molasses and lime juice together and top with ice and ginger beer. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Final Thoughts:

There is absolutely no sophomore jinx here as Delusions is a tremendous follow-up for the trio. Shoegaze fans up for some very dark angles should absolutely add this one to their collection. We continue to keep the album on heavy rotation as we find the sadness almost cathartic on a peaceful hike through the many covered and uncovered trails throughout Massachusetts.
