Bog Wizard (Campaign)

Turn this to 5.9 of 11

Released: 2018

Genre: Doom

Sounds Like: Conan, Khemmis, Om

A two piece doom band hailing from Michigan is something we will aways entertain. Bog Wizard’s debut was apparently in the works for over a decade built off of weekend jam sessions between Ben and Harlen. The EP is intriguing at first listen primarily due to its dark tones and prodding rhythms. Lombard’s vocals unfortunately wear on us over time. A sloppy brooding voice that ultimately lacks texture and intrigue. For an EP we also found ourselves lost between songs. Repetitive melodies between the first three tracks become problematic. This becomes more prominent on additional rotations. We will give a Kudos to Kichi Strauss for the amazing album art concept that intrigued us to give this one a gander.

Track Listing:

1. The Wizard in the Bog (5:08)

2. Shapeshifter (5:19)

3. Tarrasque (5:06)

4. The Bit (The Melvins Cover) (4:42)

Standout Track:

We have to go with the Melvin’s cover "The Bit". This is actually a pretty solid cover and our guess is the jam sessions may have been geared towards some doom covers and this one held strong. Quite the homage to Buzz Osborne as we really feel the energy and admiration.

Adult Beverage Pairing:

Oil of Gladness (11% ABV) barleywine, a collaboration by Dark Horse Brewing Co. of Marshall and 3 Floyds Brewing Co. of Munster, Ind.: Brooding black barleywine is packed with flavors ranging from smokey and dark fruit to toffee, sweet malts, bitter espresso and a bunch of piney hops. A Michigan favorite and high alcohol content to numb your doom senses for Bog Wizard
