Black Moon Circle (Psychedelic Spacelord)

Crank this to 8.1 of 11

Released: 2018

Genre: Space Rock

Sounds Like: The Flaming Lips, The Allman Brothers

Black Moon Circle

Psychedelic Spacelord features one track spanning nearly 47 minutes. The reality is it’s actually two songs blended, at about halfway through the song comes to a halt and quickly picks back up into steady jam mode. The Norwegian space enthusiasts have been quite prolific putting out their ninth release since only 2014. We are suckahs for meandering space jams that whisk you away into a world of improvisation. Psychedelic Spacelord unfortunately falls a bit flat in holding our fervor.

We droop a bit during several sections where the spatial background and euphoria evaporate into sections straight out of the Allman Brothers Eat A Peach. Straight-shootin jamming takes a southern turn that certainly derails the journey. The first 15 minutes engulf us as the lead vocals conjure up images of Wayne Coyne and his legendary work with the Flaming Lips. Initial build-up with spaces of electric violin add some spice to the mix. Ultimately the initial guitar groove resonates throughout and comes full Black Moon Circle at the culmination.

Track Listing:

1. Psychedelic Spacelord (46:55)

Adult Beverage Pairing:

Lervig Aktiebryggeri 3 Bean Stout, 13% ABV. Norwegian brewery Lervig’s imperial stout will sooth you and then knock you on your socks. The 3 featured beans entail vanilla, cocoa and tonka, the latter a wrinkly black legume that lends flavors of liquorice and clove to the heady mix. It’s a darkly delicious, thick and sticky beer, quite unlike anything else around, and well worth braving the Black Moon Circle.

Final Thoughts:

Psychedelic Spacelord has opened us up to the Black Moon Circle library which we have been enjoying. Their latest is a bountiful effort that perhaps has 6-8 minutes of lackluster jamming. Outside this blip, we appreciate the fuzziness and one song Sleep-like efforts. Space jam fans should throw this one in rotation and dig further into the band’s library.
