Astral Mass (Self Titled)

Crank this to 8.7 of 11

Released: 2017

Genre: Stoner Rock

Sounds Like: Clutch, Orange Goblin, Crowbar

We be suckahs for great space album art and tremendous galactic song titles. Astral Mass’ self-titled debut is a brooding mouthful of testosterone and abrasive vocals. The trio, hailing from Indianapolis, unleash their debut which will resonate for fans of Clutch and Crowbar. The album blends the old school military stoner rock influences of Neil Fallon with some lighthearted doom. Kaleth and Naish vocals take a little bit getting used to, but their anguish and despair will win you over after a few rotations. Ultimately we found ourselves getting more absorbed as the tracks progressed. Solid song structure coupled with some above average stoner fretwork makes for a pleasurable listen.

Standout Tracks:

We fucking love the song title "Clear the Tower" which comes in as the second best track. Such a great song title that sparks desperate images right off the bat. Great contrast and bass-work from Mike Naish on this one. "Cosmic String," however, takes the cake for us. Tremendous grinding and fretwork prowess by Jeff Kaleth on this one. The vibrant echo effect in the an swirling melodies really standout for us amongst the pack.

Alcohol Pairing

Space Dust IPA from the Elysian Brewing Company is a rich IPA. Great Western premium two-row, combined with c-15 and Dextri-Pils, give this beer a bright and galactic Milky Way hue. The hopping is pure starglow energy, with Chinook to bitter and late and dry additions of Citra and Amarillo. The Space Dust vibrant taste matches perfectly with the Astral Mass artwork vision.

Lasting Impression

This album brings us back to the early 90s where gritty contained no filters. The trio show some impressive talent and nostalgic framework. We appreciate their experimental dives throughout. The jamming keeps things interesting and vocal grit will grow on you for sure.
