Astrakhan (Without New Growth Process is Bloodshed)

Crank this to 9.2 of 11 - Editor's Pick

Released: 2018

Genre: Progressive Rock, Stoner Rock, Hard Rock

Sounds Like: Tool, Floater, Mastodon

Astrakhan’s fifth release (second full-length after following three EPs) is their strongest to date. The four-piece band hailing from Vancouver British Columbia have hit their stride and simultaneously ceased operations. Yes… you heard that right, following the 2018 release Astrakhan has disbanded. This is the quintessential ending on a high note for sure. The seven tracks are heady and layered with intelligent melodies and pretty diverse vocals by Mr. Zawistowski and Mr. Toth. The final album does an excellent job with contrasting vocals and pensive moments where things are brought down only to make the crescendos more impactful. We hear hints of Robert Wynia (Floater) and George Pettit (Alexisonfire).

Track Listing:

1. Heaving Receiver 08:15

2. Dominion 05:24

3. Cutting Teeth 05:54

4. A Chang Begins 05:45

5. Process is Bloodshet 04:29

6. Belief Like Water 04:12

7. Black Tourmaline 05:45

Standout Track:

"Cutting Teeth" is an intense track with amazing fretwork. You will be floored at the layers of precision and vocal clarity. Terrific contrast and change-ups on this one. The album takes you on a wonderful journey but really hits the summit right at the heart of this track, flowing beautifully into "A Change Begins" which comes in a close second for its intense meandering fuzz.

Adult Beverage Pairing:

From Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company in British Columbia, Canada we recommend Jagged Face IPA. The notes of clarity and tropical hops fit extremely well with Astrakhan. This is a Canadian pale and & Munich malt which includes centennial citra and Amarillo. 7.2% ABV is perfect for this smooth beer.

Final Thoughts:

We appreciate the efforts Astrakhan has put forth over their career and how they have built up chemistry with each release. A true shame that our late discovery will not lead to future tracking as to progress and touring. Regardless, Without New Growth Process is Bloodshed makes our editor’s pick for all its energy and precision. A ’Name Your Price’ on BandCamp by the way.
