Arsis Thesis (Pangea)

Crank this to 9.2 of 11 - Editor's Pick

Released: 2015

Genre: Sludge, Metal

Sounds Like: Red Fang, The Jesus Lizard, Bosnian Rainbows

You know you have something special when you have difficulty pinning down the heavy genre. The two-piece band (brothers) from Texas play with an eccentric and potent level of passion melding sludge, math, space and progressive rock into a deep rich fried basket of fuzz. Pangea, their latest EP contains an incredibly full sound and sharp production, an impressive feat from just guitar and drums.

The duo vocal performance coupled with the exceptionally high level of fuzz take this EP to editor’s pick status. We are enthralled with both Nick and Jake’s guttural cries and ability to really provide the listener with a whirlwind of energetic vocal styles in just under 25 minutes. Pangea is entertaining as fuck and will grab you within the first 30 seconds of the opener "Terence Fletcher". The vocals are so layered on this track, check-out how they morph into wild distortion at about the 3:25 mark... impressive as all heck.

Track Listing:

1. Terrence Fletcher (3:57)

2. Pangea (4:06)

3. Coffins (5:13)

4. Chivalry (3:49)

5. Snow (6:17)

Standout Track:

To be frank all 5 tracks shine in their own right, but gun to our heads, we are gonna go with "Coffins". The melody and hook on "Coffins" is tremendous. Deep grinding fretwork with some very impressive contrast taking things to almost jazz improvisational at one very distinct point. The track conjures up memories of a few old Fudge Tunnel tracks... incredible stuff.

Adult Beverage Pairing:

We definitely recommend throwing onPangeaand cracking open 8th Wonder Brewery’s fine Hopston, TXIPA. This hoppy, malty brew is balanced and approachable to quench the dehydration on a hot summer night. At 6.2% ABV the blend has some nice hoppy citra and cascade accents along with full body.

Final Thoughts:

We got to see first hand the passion and love these two have for their craft. Their respect and admiration for the bands that entered our Unsigned Heavy Bands Exploration was down right admirable. Our crew will be keeping a strong pulse on these two to hopefully catch them live one day. We can put a wager on the fact that these two will give their fans everything they have got on the live stage. This is a must download for your collection
