The power of album covers is a beautiful thing, that’s what drew us to Julian Magalhaes’ latest album Rise of the Eldrazi, plus we needed to know what an Eldrazi is. The Eldrazi is a creature from the game Magic The Gathering, in case you were wondering. We were a bit leery going into this, as it’s a one-man instrumental progressive metal project. Often we hear these kind of acts that have terrible production or are over-produced and have little or no direction.

Well to our delight Julian Magalhaes has released a damn fine album here. Written and produced by Julian himself, Rise of the Eldrazi is loaded with swift percussion, technical speed driven guitars and non-stop progressive metal. The production of this album is very good; some may think it’s over produced, but the clarity is top notch, every instrument stands on its own. Although the drums can sound machine-like at times, it doesn't take away from the overall experience, it just sounds great. Tune in and turn the volume up on this one and experience the precision.

Alcohol Pairing
Grab some Founders Red Rye IPA. This brew taste of rye, citrus and other spices, makes for an excellent brew to compliment Rise of the Eldrazi.

Lasting Impression
The tracks on this album are just long enough to hold our attention and not too short to lose our interest. For those who frequent instrumental progressive metal, this is a nice hidden gem for your rotation. - 7/14/2018
