The black metal scene is off to a remarkable start in 2018. Inquinamentum from Leeds, UK have put forth an album that will ambush your senses with 8342. Your mind will be overloaded with the onslaught of desolate Post-metal arrangements coupled by progressive and swift black metal heaviness. The four-piece conjure up a formula of unrelenting aggression that takes the listener on a post-apocalyptic journey through a cold and forsaken world. The music is extremely tight and even inspiring at times. Inquinamentum have really taken strides in opening the gates of the black metal world to the masses.

Vocal Performance – 8.7 of 11
The blackened death-like vocals never waiver one bit, they blend into the music flawlessly.

Weight of the Heavy – 10 of 11
8342 is a fucking steadfast heavy beast, sounds monumental when cranked at high volumes.

Fretwork Prowess – 9 of 11
The swift and rhythmic post-blackened riffage is non-stop and a thing of beauty.

Overall Album Flow – 8.9 of 11
8342 has a consistent flow that never strays from the assault of blackened metal.

Album Cover Aesthetics – 8.8 of 11
The artwork photography taken by AHPflaum Photography ( really captures the desolation that Inquinamentum bring exude.

Production Value – 8.9 of 11
This album is produced extremely well. It’s packed with a boatload of heavy textures, yet they manage to create a crisp sound.

Standout Track(s)
“To Wager Scars” is a brilliant fucking song that will that will wow your senses. Listen closely as there is a ton of fluid rhythmic change up. After making through this track, we were suddenly all engrossed with the album. The last song “Benight” is also rich in fluidity, the track bleeds of authentic black metal and Post-metal structures.

Alcohol Pairing:
Brewmeister Snake Venom. At 67.5% ABV, Snake Venom is not for the weak, it is recommended to enjoy in small doses. This Scottish brew is sold one bottle at a time and comes with a letter of authentication and explanation. We have never tried this, but it’s on our bucket list of beer tastings.

Lasting Impression:
We’ve been yearning for some quality black metal that has an original sound and doest bore us after a couple listens. Inquinamentum pull this off and keeps our interest level high, there is so much involved. Fans of acts like Alcest or Ghost Bath will no doubt be drawn onto their apocalyptic world. - 3/1/2018
