Confusion Master hailing from Germany have resurrected the lo-fi, 70s cult-worshipping doom that we have been craving since the days of Electric Wizards’ 1997 masterpiece, Come My Fanatics… Released through Japan label Bonten Records, these four cosmic dwellers have quietly released one of this year’s finest and trippiest doom albums. Awaken should not be previewed by skipping around or fast forwarding, these songs are lengthy and need to be listened to in their entirety to appreciate the craftsmanship. Just succumb to the music and let it take over, you’ll find yourself in a sedated state of mind about a quarter way through.

Confusion Master have taken the classic doom themes from bands like Electric Wizard and Sleep, forged them with the psychedelia of Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats to create this wonderful bliss of doom. The vocals have a pure hazy unique style with brilliant aquatic echo that does not waiver one bit. Sounding like Perry Ferral on heroin singing from a well deep within the earth’s surface. Fans of heavy psych and doom should not pass on this one, in fact, just pick it up on vinyl, it will stun your senses.

1. Witch Polution 10:44
2. Northern Midnight Ghoul Dance 10:41
3. Reapers Fist 06:57
4. Goner Colony 11:08
5. In the Shadow of the Bong 06:47
6. False Dawn 08:10
7. Awaken 04:55

Standout Track(s)
“Goner Coloney” oozes with trippy psychedelia and melting doom. The occasional spoken word that appears from time to time is so fucking intriguing and will lure you into their occult mastery. As this 11-plus minute track progresses, you’ll find yourself fully absorbed in their brand of drug-laced haze. The last cut “Awaken” needs to be cranked at high volumes to appreciate its possessive sound. It’s a meandering  nightmarish affair that is inspired by the Christmas classic “Silent Night”… just give it a listen, we’ll leave it at that.

Adult Beverage Pairing
Consecrator Doppelbock by Michigan’s Bells Brewery. This 8% winter Doppleback-styled beer pairs perfectly with Confusion Master. The drawing of the goats on the label also enhances the experience.
