Welcome back 90s era stoner rock and all its glory. From London, the foursome known as Into The Sun has graced us with their debut EP Through Darkened Skies. If you were a fan of the above mentioned bands and love mid-to-late nineties stoner rock, than give Into The Sun a shot. Their music is raw, infectious and downright stoner driven.

What are the highlights of the album?
This is a tough one to answer as there are only four fuzzed-out tunes on here. “Ride On” begins the EP with a classic stoner rock build up that sounds like an ending to a song. The thumping rhythm ensues and we are now on our way. The EP gets better with “Breakdown” as the band continues to impress with this desert driving tune. The breakdown midway through this song is refreshing, we love their patience and letting the music breathe, it’s important to have these contrasts within this style of rock. The next cut “The End” will take you on a spaced out ride for 8 minutes. The stoned fluidity of this song is mesmerizing and heavy, really pulling the listener into the EP. The last song “Into The Sun” is more raw fuzz to seek your teeth into, the percussion sounds deep on this one when cranked.

How is the production value?

The production raw and not very polished, but this is a good sound when it comes to this style of rock. Think of Kyuss’ Wretch or very early Fu Manhcu. Crank it up quite a few notches and listen how the music will challenge your system with its low-toned bass.

How is the vocal performance?
The vocals of Chris Stanton fit right into the mold of Into The Sun. He’s not flashy and overpowering; it feels natural over all the fuzz.

What adult beverage to enjoy while listening to this album?

Something rich and smooth should complement this album. Pick up some Clown Shoes Coffee Pecan Pie Porter, this 8.5 ABV porter is so damn tasty it can only enhance your listening experience.

Does the album art reflect the music?
Somewhat, upon first glance one could think this is a doom album. The abandoned, dark photo of the tree makes us think doom, but the classic san serif font of the band name has a spaced out stoner feel.

What are our final thoughts on Through Darkened Skies?

Into The Sun has revitalized our love for this classic stoner sound, not that it ever really wavered. By now you probably get the gist of the band, so we urge you to visit their Bandcamp page and pick this one up. - 12/30/2016
